THOMAS K. HYATT
Thomas K. Hyatt is a partner in the law firm of Dentons US LLP, resident in the Washington, DC, office, where he serves as co-chair of the firm’s US Nonprofit Entities practice. He is a 1979 cum laude graduate of Boston College and received his law degree in 1982 from the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Law and Commerce. His practice is focused on corporate and tax-exempt organization issues for nonprofit organizations. He has particular expertise in legal issues affecting tax-exempt healthcare providers and in governance and public policy issues affecting tax-exempt higher education institutions. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Pennsylvania.
Mr. Hyatt is a licensed consultant for the Standards for Excellence Institute. He frequently lectures on business and tax planning issues for nonprofit organizations and has written numerous articles on tax-exempt organization topics. He is coauthor with Bruce R. Hopkins of The Law of Tax-Exempt Healthcare Organizations (Wiley, 2013). Mr. Hyatt is a Senior Fellow for Public Policy at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges.
JOSEPH S. JOHNSTON JR.
Joseph S. Johnston Jr. is senior consultant for AGB Search, a national consulting firm that assists colleges and universities in planning for, recruiting, selecting, and transitioning new executive leaders. He oversees two services: AGB Interim Search, which helps institutions identify candidates for interim positions at the cabinet level, and the Compensation Evaluation Service, which advises boards and presidents on the compensation of cabinet-level executives.
For more than three decades, he has served in a variety of positions in higher education: lecturer in English and assistant to two presidents at Bryn Mawr College, research associate with the Institute for Research on Higher Education at the University of Pennsylvania, vice president for programs and vice president for education and global initiatives at the Association of American Colleges and Universities, and senior vice president at the Washington Center.
Dr. Johnston is the author of numerous publications, including a series of three books on the integration of liberal and professional education and a book on international education. He is coauthor with James P. Ferrare of A Complete Guide to Presidential Search for Universities and Colleges (AGB Press, 2018). He has consulted widely to colleges and universities. He has also served on a number of governing and advisory boards, including those of the National Humanities Alliance, the National Security Education Program, the University of North Carolina–Asheville, and Warren Wilson College.
A native of Virginia, Dr. Johnston graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors from Randolph-Macon College. He holds an MBA in finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD in English literature from the University of Chicago.
