Just as every institution of higher education is unique, so are the boards that lead them. Still, there are some characteristics of boards more significant than others. Composing and engaging a strategic board means not only finding the right individuals, but building the right team to move your institution to the next level of success and service.
As Artis Hampshire-Cowan, AGB senior fellow and former vice president and secretary of the board, Howard University, noted, “A strong and effective leadership team is foundational to institutional success, especially during periods of challenge and change. Boards and presidents must work collaboratively to engage key stakeholders to establish the institution’s highest priorities. Boards must engage in constructive and meaningful conversations about difficult topics while being efficient and deliberate in decision making.”
