We contacted AGB Consulting to help us rethink the committee structure of the board. We had too many committees with very little format, and board meetings were being extended by full days to accommodate various committee meetings.
The president had experience with other boards and knew there was a more effective approach. We brought in an AGB consultant to synthesize best practices for committee structures in general and to help us develop a specific plan to fit our board. Our AGB consultant was extremely thorough, and the process took a full academic year. The consultant interviewed board members and other key stakeholders. He synthesized committees, such as combining the endowment committee and the facilities committee into a new finance committee. He also worked with the president and board leadership to develop a new committee meeting structure, which we are still using today.
The board now operates more effectively and board meetings run much faster. In the more than eight years since this initial engagement, we have used AGB Consulting as a resource and a sounding board multiple times. We are now working with the same AGB consultant on our strategic planning process.
