Today, AGB released the report of the Commission on College and University Board Governance—Consequential Boards: Adding Value Where It Matters Most. The report was the result of year-long deliberations of the 26 members of the commission, chaired by Phil Bredesen, the former governor of Tennessee. The report’s call to action and the seven specific recommendations will serve to frame key priorities for AGB over the months ahead. The report’s underlying purpose is to ensure that boards recognize that the challenges confronting higher education require a new commitment to meeting their leadership responsibilities.
The stakes are high as public and private higher institutions are challenged to demonstrate the value of their service in meeting a larger public purpose. How boards assume a more strategic approach to governance lies at the heart of the report.
The AGB report affirms the necessity for board members to adhere to the legal standards of serving as a fiduciary and to recognize that those principles are about individual responsibility and making decisions as a collective body.
