Future Research on the Horizon

What do adjunct faculty unions, enterprise risk management, HBCU strategic issues, and higher education governance all have in common? They are among several current and upcoming surveys and reports that AGB has on its research agenda for the remainder of the academic year. AGB’s commitment to developing a practical and responsive research portfolio on best practices and emerging trends in governance is reflected in this broad range of research projects. We hope these efforts will result in important resources for our member institutions, as well as informing our work in creating timely and innovative programs. A quick snapshot of what to expect for each:

  • In response to the growing number of adjunct faculty, the most recent AGB Quick Governance Survey sought to learn more about governing board practices and policies as they pertain to adjunct faculty working conditions and collective bargaining agreements.
  • In 2008, AGB and United Educators published a joint report about the use of and attitudes towards enterprise risk management (ERM). This year, we will publish a follow-up report about whether institutional practices regarding ERM have changed over time or stayed the same.
  • In an effort to better understand the unique strategic and governance issues facing historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), AGB is currently surveying the presidents of these institutions to gather their insights about HBCU governance writ large. The information gathered will be used to produce a short report and to build a series of targeted programs and resources specifically for HBCUs.
  • AGB’s 2014 Annual State of Higher Education Governance survey focuses on issues related to board recruitment and training, engagement, and leadership in order to learn more about specific board responsibilities and the overall work of the board. The report that results from this survey will document some of the important trends in governance practices.
