Grant Callery

Former Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority

Mr. Callery retired in 2012 as executive vice president and general counsel of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), the principal private sector regulator of the securities industry in the United States.

He has served as a member of the board of trustees of Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio since 2003. He was chairman of that board from 2008 through 2011 and currently serves as chair of the board’s trusteeship committee. During his tenure on the board he chaired a special committee on board governance (2005- 2006) which undertook an in depth review of a range of issues including – amendments to the board’s governing documents; the structure and function of board committees; the board’s role in the strategic planning process and the development of a trustee giving policy. He was also a member of the college’s visioning task force which was charged with the development of Vision 2020 for the school. As board chair he was responsible for the appointment of a presidential search committee in 2011 on which he served as a member.

Mr. Callery serves as a member of the Council of Board Chairs of the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (2010 – present). He is also a member of the Investor Advisory Group of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB).

In his almost 40 year legal career he has experience as a lawyer and executive in private sector financial markets regulation with significant experience in legal and compliance management, board governance and the operations of a large tax exempt organization with 3,000 employees and an operating budget in excess of $950 million.

At FINRA, he was responsible for providing board governance, litigation, employment and commercial law, support to FINRA and its subsidiaries and managed the company’s ethics and data privacy programs. Mr. Callery was responsible for the development of FINRA’s current corporate ethics program including internal whistleblower policies, voluntary compliance with Sarbanes Oxley requirements and a Code of Ethics for the FINRA Board of Governors.

Mr. Callery is a graduate of Marietta College (B.S.) and the Georgetown University Law Center (J.D.). He is the author of a number of legal publications and is peer review rated “AV” (Preeminent) by the Martindale Hubbell Legal Directory and listed in Marquis Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in American Law.
